In Difficult Times, Feed Your Soul

One year ends and another year begins. We celebrate the beauty of the holiday season, we party on New Year’s, and all the while we mourn the loss of innocent lives in Connecticut, we grieve over the devastation of a hurricane, and we try to make sense of the senselessness that often characterizes life on planet Earth.

So many hearts are heavy right now. If yours is, then it’s time to grieve. If your heart is bright and your spirit is strong, then it’s time to reach out and uplift those around you. As far back as we can trace history and pre-history, humanity has been at war with itself.

Our tendencies to attack and destroy are aimed at others, and oddly enough, we even deploy our lower nature in a way that directly harms our own body and soul. Violence exists on a continuum. Insanity can run from mild to extreme. But so too does love cover a vast and limitless terrain from lovelessness to the kind of enlightened heart that can heal others and change the world.

Choose your place on the continuum of love, consider making a bold choice, stake your claim there, and get down to the business of putting that love into action. Meanwhile, don’t worry about the world coming to an end. Of course the world is ending. Every day things end and things begin.

Every day we need a fresh start, we need renewal, we need hope that greater things are possible in one’s own life, and in the greater collective that we all share. Changing the world just might be easier than we think. The power to change starts in the comfort of your own soul, in the deep inner knowing that each of us has a gift to give that’s necessary medicine for the wounds of the world.

In times such as these I redouble my efforts to stay awake and to leave planet Earth a better place than when I first opened my eyes and found it. If you’re an American, you’re likely familiar with the term “the American dream.” Is there an African dream? Is there a Russian dream? A Mexican dream?

I don’t know these answers, but even if I did, and even if every nation had its dream, perhaps it’s time for a bigger dream that we all can share. Perhaps it’s time to wake up to a grander vision that truly brings out the best that humanity can possibly be.

So yes, eat right, exercise your butt off, avoid GMO’s, lose 5 more pounds, and don’t believe the garbage you’ve heard that organic food isn’t the best food ever. But have a bigger dream for humanity, and do your best to dig as deep as you can inside yourself to metabolize the traumas and tragedies of life. Join forces.

Find like-minded and like hearted souls. Do good. Grow stronger in the face of darkness. And as quickly as you can, remember who you truly are and why you came here, relax yourself, trust in something Greater, and deliver. What’s your dream for the world?
