Hi, I’m Emily Rosen, Director of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.
Today we’re going to talk about 5 great tips for overeaters.
There are so many reasons why we overeat. Some of us overeat when we’re happy, some of us when we’re bored, some of us overeat when we’re feeling sad or lonely, and for others, we just have a hard time recognizing when we’re full. Whatever the reason for your overeating, you can learn to transform this challenge and empower yourself. Here are 5 great tips for overeaters:
Tip #1 for Overeaters – Stay Hydrated
The Earth’s surface is covered by about 71% water. The average person is composed of about 65% water. Simply put, water is the essence of all life functions. Dehydration can be linked to many ailments, including joint aches, fatigue, brain fog, constipation, and depression. Chances are, if you constantly feel the need to eat even though you don’t feel hungry, you could very well be thirsty!
Tip #2 for Overeaters – Eat Real Food
Many people overeat simply because the body is nutrient deprived. If we eat junk food on a regular basis, we’re short-cutting the body’s needs. If we constantly skip meals, or follow a low calorie diet, we’re short-cutting the body’s needs. If we don’t eat enough healthy fats – essential fatty acids – we’re once again short-cutting the body’s nutritional needs. And this can powerfully drive us to overeat not because we are willpower weaklings, but because the body is screaming for necessary nutrition.
Tip for Overeaters #3 – Welcome Pleasure
Give yourself permission to be in a body without shame. Allow yourself to love the taste of food. We usually overeat because we think it’s wrong to enjoy food, not because we give ourselves full permission. So, if you’re going to eat that slice of chocolate cake, don’t feel guilty. Allow yourself to be present and enjoy the pleasure of that food. Full permission allows us to feel worthy of that indulgence. When we can do it above ground, we don’t need to go underground in shame and secrecy.
Tip for Overeaters #4 – Express Yourself
So often, we overeat to stuff our desires down because we think someone else in our life will disapprove, or we’re ashamed of our emotions, or we don’t think we have permission to speak up. Maybe we’re afraid no one would listen or care. If we’re feeling something at the core of our being, chances are it’s part of our purpose, and we need to express that truth. Self expression makes us feel whole, well nourished, and naturally regulates our appetite.
Tip for Overeaters #5 – Get and Give Plenty of Love
Find your people! If you don’t come with a loving family, find the people who support who you are at your core. Get and give love through touch, gift giving, listening, sharing, speaking kind and encouraging words, and being more centered in your heart. Simply remember to love your life and be grateful for what you have. A happy heart is the best way to feel fulfilled without needing to turn to food.
Overeating isn’t the enemy. It’s here to teach us how to better understand who we are, and what we need to truly nourish ourselves.
